Zanzibar National Archives (Nyerere Road, Kilimani, Zanzibar) – located outside the main town, about 2km along Nyerere road from the Mnazi Moja Hospital (in an area called Kilimani), are the Zanzibar Archives. Here, history buffs would likely immerse themselves with the documents and other materials that are housed here.
For those interested in tracing the island’s history, one can comb through books & manuscripts (dating from the 17th century – much of which are in Arabic from the days of Omani Sultan rule over Zanzibar), as well as documents and other materials recording the European explorations and interventions in the island. Free admission. Hours: 7:30 am – 3:30 pm (Monday –Friday), 7:30 am – 2:00 pm (Saturday).
